GE Launches PT878 Portable Ultrasonic Flowmeter: Redefining Precision and Mobility for Industrial Flow Measurement

BOSTON, 2025 11 06 — GE (NYSE: GE), a global leader in innovative technology solutions for industrial, energy, and healthcare sectors, today announced the launch of the PT878 Portable Ultrasonic Flowmeter—a next-generation device designed to deliver unmatched accuracy, flexibility, and ease of use for on-site flow measurement across oil and gas, water treatment, chemical processing, and power generation industries.

Built on GE’s decades of expertise in ultrasonic sensing and industrial instrumentation, the PT878 addresses a critical pain point for field engineers and maintenance teams: the need for reliable, real-time flow data without the constraints of fixed installations. Unlike traditional flowmeters that require pipeline shutdowns for installation or calibration, the PT878 features a non-intrusive clamp-on design, enabling users to deploy it in minutes on existing pipes ranging from 0.5 inches (12 mm) to 120 inches (3000 mm) in diameter—eliminating downtime and reducing operational costs.

Uncompromising Accuracy, Even in Challenging Conditions

At the core of the PT878 is GE’s advanced ultrasonic transit-time technology, which leverages dual transducers to measure flow velocity with a precision of ±0.5% of reading (under standard conditions) and a repeatability of ±0.2%. The device’s intelligent signal processing algorithm minimizes interference from pipe material variations (including steel, stainless steel, PVC, and copper) and fluid properties (such as viscosity and turbidity), ensuring consistent performance in harsh industrial environments—from high-temperature pipelines (up to 302°F/150°C) to corrosive chemical applications.

“Industrial operations can’t afford guesswork when it comes to flow measurement—accuracy directly impacts efficiency, compliance, and safety,” said [Insert Name], Senior Product Manager for GE’s Industrial Measurement Solutions. “The PT878 was engineered to meet the most demanding field requirements: it delivers lab-grade precision in a rugged, portable form factor, so teams can validate fixed meter readings, troubleshoot system inefficiencies, or conduct spot checks with confidence—anytime, anywhere.”

Designed for Field-Proven Durability and User-Centric Convenience

The PT878 prioritizes mobility and resilience. Encased in a IP65-rated rugged housing, it withstands dust, water splashes, and accidental drops—making it suitable for both indoor and outdoor use, including remote oil fields or construction sites. Its lightweight design (under 5 lbs/2.3 kg) and ergonomic handle allow for easy transport, while the large 7-inch color touchscreen provides intuitive navigation, even when wearing work gloves.

For data management, the PT878 offers flexible connectivity options: Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for seamless integration with mobile devices (via GE’s companion app, FlowSight™) and USB-C for direct data export to laptops or cloud platforms. The app enables users to store, analyze, and share measurement reports in real time, streamlining compliance documentation and cross-team collaboration. Additionally, the device supports multiple fluid types (liquid, gas, and steam) and complies with global industry standards, including ISO 11631 and AGA 10, ensuring compatibility with international regulatory requirements.

Driving Sustainability and Operational Efficiency

Beyond precision and portability, the PT878 aligns with GE’s commitment to sustainability. By enabling accurate flow monitoring, the device helps operators detect leaks, optimize resource usage, and reduce waste—key steps in lowering carbon footprints. For example, in water treatment plants, the PT878 can quickly identify unauthorized flow deviations, preventing water loss and reducing energy consumption associated with pumping systems.

“The PT878 isn’t just a flowmeter—it’s a tool for industrial teams to work smarter, safer, and more sustainably,”  Easy Semiconductor Technology (Hong Kong) Limited. “In an era where operational agility and environmental responsibility are paramount, this device empowers our customers to make data-driven decisions that boost productivity while minimizing their environmental impact.”
